HERNE BAY, RECULVER, MINNIS BAY, BIRCHINGTON, WESTGATE-ON-SEA
Located on the north Kent coast between Whitstable and Margate, these towns and communities became popular holiday resorts after the arrival of the railway in the 1860s. The beach at Herne Bay is shingle but just 10 miles away at Minnis Bay are broad expanses of sand, popular with sail boards and surfers. This area is also important historically dating back to Roman occupation and earlier.
